Home Styling With Tropical Décor

If your home is looking a little lack luster these days and in need of a pick me up, you might want to consider a touch of tropical interior design as a remedy for what ails you. With a few well-placed tropical décor pieces, you can instantly transform a room into a garden oasis. You do not necessarily have to go over the top with tropical decor ideas. By simply choosing the right items and featuring them in an effective way, you can have a room that oozes island paradise without having towel wrapped male/female servants at the door waving palm fronds.

The Tropical Decor Principle

The main principle of tropical décor for homes, or Balinese interior design, is bringing the outdoors indoors. That’s why you will see natural elements heavily used where possible. Wood, greenery, stone, are all materials that bring a sense of the outdoors inside. The same applies when furnishing patios and gardens. If you are looking to do an outdoor tropical décor theme then the same applies. Use natural materials for furniture and décor accents.

Tropical Decor Furniture

To create the perfect resort paradise room the key is to start with tropical décor furniture.  Rattan, wicker, or teak always works well as a basis for creating the perfect atmosphere. You can choose a dark mahogany brown rattan with bold and bright cushions. If you are redecorating a bedroom white wicker works perfectly as a jumping off point. Rich caramel teak is equally as sumptuous when combined with home decor accessories that inspire images of island getaways. By picking the base furniture pieces first, it is then easy to layer individual accessories into your design until the desired theme is achieved.

Tropical Decor Ideas

Once you have chosen your tropical décor furniture pieces and have them in place, you can then throw yourself into the fun part of creating your new room. Choosing tropical decor pieces that build your theme but do not overpower it can be nothing short of exhilarating. One great way to do this is by choosing pieces that not only build upon your theme but also have a hint of your personality in them. Some tropical décor ideas are: if you love to travel then opting for an aged looking map in a bamboo frame might be perfect. The map reflects your love for travel while the bamboo frame ties in perfectly to your theme. If you love needlepoint then add a throw cushion or two that have a tropical needlepoint design on them. You still get the reflection of your hobby but you get it in a way that compliments your design aesthetic perfectly. If you love all your feathered friends then adding a wicker bird cage in a corner with a lush green plant overflowing out of it would work well in your room. Each time you see your bird cage you are reminded of your fondness for birds and you have managed to work that fondness into your design scheme.

Whatever you do, do not feel compelled to purchase all of your elegant tropical décor pieces at once. Take your time and slowly build your overall look one piece at a time. If you take a vacation and find the perfect tropical accessory while you are on your holiday then feel free to bring it home and at it to your room. If you come across a great piece in a thrift shop that just needs a touch of paint, then you can feel comfortable working it into the look of your room. If you try to purchase all of your decor accents all at once, your room can end up looking forced or contrived. Take your time and build your tropical getaway one lovely accent at a time.
